Description
Southern Fortress Gate The Camels, Hisarya, Bulgaria
The greatest interest in terms of architecture is the south gate. It consists of an arched passage, which, however, is preceded on the outside by a larger arch supported by two massive pillars. The south gate is flanked by two rectangular towers. Recent studies have shown that at its apex it did not end with a separate third tower (mashikuli), but was a continuous U-shaped battlefield on two levels, the ascent of which was done by an internal petra staircase built in the western building of the gate. . The broken brick arch preserved to this day on the ridge of the southern gate is actually part of a decorative brick vault, in the middle of which there was an embrasure for direct firing at the enemy. The gate was closed with a double door, locked on the inside with a solid wooden beam. On both sides of the front arch are formed decorative niches in which statues of emperors or deities were placed. Above the arch, the entire interior façade is decorated with a brick cornice, which served as the base of a triangular pediment.
The original gate rises to a height of 13 m. It is so called because at the beginning of the 20th century the door was divided and looked like two camels frozen against each other. At this place in 1882 Ivan Vazov wrote the famous Bulgarian poem "Fatherland kind, how beautiful you are!".
